Fleet Fuel Appliance Phase II Project Summary

Fleet Fuel Cell Appliance at BC Transit

Hydrogen Fleet Fuel Appliance at BC transit uses Stuart's water electrolysis and vehicle fuel supply technology to produce hydrogen to fill three fuel cell city buses in Vancouver, BC. Stuart's electrolysis process uses electrical energy to convert water into its two main components, oxygen and hydrogen. The hydrogen is compressed and sent directly to the buses.

Zero Emission Vehicles

All three buses refueled at this site are supplied by Daimler Benz/Ballard Fuel Cell Engines Inc. and use the Ballard PEM fuel cell technology. The fuel cell replaces the internal combustion engine and uses hydrogen instead of gasoline. As hydrogen is a zero emission fuel, the result is a zero emission vehicle. BC Transit will incorporate these buses into their regular bus fleet and has assigned them to various routes carrying passengers around the city of Vancouver.

Zero Emission Fuel Supply

By using an electrolysis process, Stuart is able to produce hydrogen fuel during "off-peak" hours taking advantage of cheaper electricity rates. The hydrogen is produced during the evening and the buses are filled at night when they are not in use. In Vancouver off peak renewable hydroelectric power can be used to produce hydrogen providing a "zero emission fuel supply" for the buses.

The buses are filled using the S-ELECT series hydrogen connectors which are designed and built specifically for hydrogen use. The nozzles, built with the end user in mind, are very easy to use. These nozzles were jointly developed by Stuart and Sherex/OPW.
